In order to convert analogue electrical signals into digital binary numbers the following steps take place:
1. Sampling - Period capturing and recording of voice (resulting in a PAM Pulse Amplitute Modulation signal)
2. Quantization - Assigning numeric values to the voltage (or height) of each sample
3. Encoding - Representing the numeric values in a binary format
4. Compression (optional) - Aims to reduce the number of bits transmited to conserve bandwidth.
High quality voice calls have a high sampling rate, the down side to this is that generates a higher bit-rate, which is more bandwidth intensive!
